What is Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety disorders including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), are marked by persistent, disproportionate anxiety and worry about various events for at least six months. GAD often leads to difficulty controlling worry and is accompanied by physical symptoms like restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbances. Other anxiety disorders include social anxiety, panic disorder, agoraphobia, separation anxiety, and selective mutism.

Certain risk factors increase one’s likelihood of developing an anxiety disorder, such as genetics, trauma experiences, substance abuse and other health conditions. Triggers for anxiety usually are stressful situations in life, life transitions, health problems, social events, insomnia and caffeine.

Recognizing Common Symptoms of Anxiety
  • Rapid heart rate and/or heart palpitations
  • Sweating
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Muscle tension
  • Restlessness
  • Insomnia
  • Not able to control worry

How to Treat Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety Therapy usually includes psychotherapy (also called “Talk Therapy”), medication or a combination of both. The following therapy approach can help to treat anxiety symptoms, and anxiety disorders:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Anxiety
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):  Focuses on identifying and challenging unhelpful thoughts or beliefs that feed your anxious behaviour. The goal is to change your thinking to impact your feelings and behaviours.
Managing Anxiety with Mindfulness
  • Mindfulness: Founder by Dr.Jon_Kabat-Zinn , Mindfulness helps one to focus on the present moment without judgment, instead of excessively thinking about the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness techniques also help to calm the mind by focusing on the physical senses. When mindfulness techniques are used together with psychotherapy, it helps to reduce anxiety symptoms.
Overcoming Anxiety with Exposure Therapy
  • Exposure Therapy: The goal of exposure therapy is to gradually expose one to the fears to learn that those fears are misplaced. It is a safe experience guided by the therapist. With repeated exposure over time, one learn to stop avoiding the fear and hence quality of life improved.

The objective of this session is for you to share briefly your issue with our therapist, ask any questions you may have about therapy and assess if there is a good fit for you and therapist to work together. You will not be charged for this session. We will assign you another therapist if it is not a good fit. If you are comfortable with the therapist assigned, you can extend the session to a full 60 minutes session provided the therapist is available.


Joselyn Loh – Founder and Clinical Director 

Joselyn is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. She is trained in Trauma-Focused CBT, Schema Therapy, Expressive Therapy in Sandplay and Symbol Work. She is experienced in working with couples who experienced trauma due to infidelity, individual who experienced childhood trauma, relational trauma and children who witnessed and experienced trauma due to parental divorce and other trauma.

Melissa Yoong – Consultant Senior Psychotherapist 

Melissa has over a decade of experience and holds a Bachelor’s in Social Sciences (Psychology) from the National University of Singapore and a Master’s in Counselling from Monash University. Her expertise includes working with trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, psychoses, and personality disturbances. Melissa is trained in EMDR, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, and EFCT. She integrates psychodynamic, emotion-focused, and somatic approaches in her therapy.

Juliana Pang is a Psychotherapist 

Juliana has a Master’s in Counselling from Monash University. Juliana specializes in addiction and rehabilitation counselling, managing anxiety, depression, anger issues, burnout, and PTSD. She is trained in EMDR, the Gottman Method, and the Emotion-Focused Couples Therapy. Additionally, she is a Certified Partner Trauma Therapist and Certified International Gaming Disorder Professional.
